Shea McAleese

Shea has represented New Zealand as a midfielder and a defender since his debut in May 2005. Highlights of his career so far include the Commonwealth Games, the World Cup Qualifier (where the Blacksticks won the tournament) and the World Cup in 2006. Shea has recently changed his position to striker and is looking to add to his tally of nine international goals. Currently he has 57 international test caps.

What age did you start playing hockey? 10
What inspired you to want to be a Blackstick? The chance to play at an Olympic games and compete all over the World against some of the best players in the world

Major competitions you have attended: Commonwealth Games 2006, World Cup 2006, Olympic and World Cup Qualifying Tournaments
Who did you play in your debut? Pakistan in 2005, in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.
Which team do you look forward to playing the most? Australia as they are our biggest rivals and seem to always be one of the best teams in the World.
Which team do you not look forward to playing? Chile, as they play more like Rugby players than hockey players
Who is your favourite international hockey player? Shabaz a now retired player from Pakistan. I don’t idolise any current players, I do respect them but I want to be better than they are
Most embarrassing hockey moment? Running head first into the goal post. Was extremely sore!!
Most memorable hockey moment: Scoring my first goal against Canada in the 2006 Commonwealth Games with all my friends and family watching and supporting me. Winning the World Cup Qualifying Tournament in China.
Least favourite hockey moment: Dislocating my shoulder in Germany and yet again against Japan in a test match
What do you most like about hockey/sport? That it’s a team game, but with individual components. Your able to meet other teams and gain new friends all over the world just by playing sport.

Pretty much everyone in my family as at some point they have all helped me to get where I am today in Hockey and Life. But of late I was say Greg Nicol as he is a great sounding board who has achieved at the highest level and gives me regular advice which has made me a better hockey player.
