Kayla Sharland

Kayla made her debut for New Zealand as a 17 year old in 2003. Since then she has developed into one of the most dynamic young strikers in world hockey and in 2005 was one of the top 5 nominations for the FIH Junior Player of the Year award. Highlights so far in her career include representing New Zealand at the Athens Olympics and Champions Trophy in 2004, the Champions Challenge in 2005 and the Commonwealth Games in 2006. Kayla currently has 83 international test caps and 11 international goals for New Zealand.

What age did you start playing hockey? 7
What inspired you to want to be a Blackstick? Watching the two local girls from Palmerston North play Moria senior and Skippy Hamahona, I was a huge fan of the girls even kept a scrapbook of the team since 1998.

Who did you play in your debut? Canada at my home turf Palmerston North in 2003
Which team do you look forward to playing the most? Argentina - I like playing against them as they have the world's best player & have a lot of flare. I also enjoy playing Australia and Holland as you know they are always going to be very tough matches, Playing the top teams can allow you to measure yourself and the team to where you are at.
Which team do you not look forward to playing? Any of the Asian teams, (Korea, China, Japan) because they just keep on running, very fast!
Who is your favourite international hockey player? Luciana Aymar
Most embarrassing hockey moment? Playing school hockey in our club division in Palmerston North, I was running along with the ball right in front of the photographer and my skirt fell off! Of course it was in the paper!
Most memorable hockey moment: Winning Champions Challenge and Oceania Olympic Qualifiers also in 2004 Olympic Games
Least favourite hockey moment: Rupturing my ACL in the first 5 minutes of the World Cup Qualifying tournament in 2006
What do you most like about hockey/sport? Hockey is a team sport where you can meet a lot of friends, Hockey is a really skillful game and there is always a new skill to learn.
